I posted a sound clip from this guitar back in April when I had just finished it and thought it was time to do some more recording to see how it has "opened up" over the last 5 months:



At the time I thought the trebles were a bit lacking and Daniel M told me to be patient as cedar tops did open up over time. Well I think he was right as I like what I am hearing now a lot. Cedar/maple is a great combination and I will have to try this sometime on a baritone.

I've always wanted to learn the slip-jig Catherine Kelley's after hearing Tony McManus's great arrangement and finally got round to it this week. His is in DADGAD but I've been playing a lot on the cittern lately in GCGCD tuning which made me want to revisit the CGCGCD tuning that I have played lots of stuff in in previous years.

So I've worked out an arrangement, largely based around the McManus version but with my own "take" in CGCGCD. I wanted something to follow it and so put together a jig in the same key which for now is called Daithi de Faoite's. Very rough and ready and "work in progress".

The recording was done with flat EQ and no effects. I used 2 mikes - AKG C1000S pointing just in front of the soundhole and a Shure SM58 placed just above the sound port.

Beautiful. I love this type of music.

The mics struggle to pick up the bass, but I can just about hear it..a very clear bell-like bass which sounds very beautiful. I can imagine it sounding more prominent than that.

the maple indeed has a lovely bright ringing tone that will be enhanced by the warm cedar as it opens.Sam Price38987.7556944444

Dave, nice work!

The guitar sounds outstanding, and that's some pretty nice playing too!

What kind of room do you record in? I assume you have some kind of acoustic treatment, because the reverberations are very nicely contained.

Dave the guitar sounded tremendous, and the playing and arrangement was really nice as well. I could listen to that style of music all day and never tire. Again both were exceptional.

The guitar sounds fabulous. The maple - cedar combo is not one I would have thought to use. I like it. I like it a lot.

Ah, Dave, Sweetie wants to know if you have a CD. And if you don't, why not? And will you be posting more clips? I have to agree.

Great sound Dave, love the jig format, especially suits altered tunings. Funnily enough I sent a jig in DADGad to Russell a couple of days ago for his opinion, (and my version of the Harry Lime theme) seems like they're gettin popular!

Oh, and you know I just love the guitar!

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Sam - the bass is fine and full but in this tuning with the low string a 0.052" and down to C a slightly heavier string might help.

Kelby - I just use the sitting room to record in, nothing special in terms of acoustic treatment.

Sweetie - I did a CD about 4 years ago before I started building guitars, using my McIlroy instruments. It's OK but has me singing on it as well which isn't as pretty (which reminds me, I have a copy here I promised Rod True back in May Rod - it will be in the post tomorrow!!) When I can find some time I want to do another one using my own instruments.

Colin - mail me the jig and other stuff too. I'd love to hear it. By the way where is Russell? I haven't seen him post for ages.

Rod - Keith Richards plays in Open G tuning with the low string removed. His alleged reply when asked the secret of his success was "Five strings, three chords, one a*****e."

First, no worries about the CD, I would still love to hear it, how bout making MP3's and posting them on your site? That would save the shipping. Also, I would love to hear a new album (nuddge nuddge) anytime you want to record one

I finally had the time to give your "Catherine Kelley's" a listen. Very nice! I'd even pay money to go out to hear that on a Saturday night. Your guitar sounds terrific, too! Appealing timbre and superb intonation. Well done!
